Safeway recognizes that the world's oceans require us to balance our ongoing business need for meeting the growing consumer demand for seafood with sound environmental stewardship.
In this regard, Safeway has taken important strides to reduce the impact our seafood purchases have on this delicate ecosystem. Published in 2009, our comprehensive Seafood Sustainability Policy included the formation of an internal Sustainable Seafood Taskforce, supplier outreach, employee training and customer education. In fact, information about our seafood sustainability policy can now be found at most Safeway seafood departments.
Recently, the company joined forces with FishWise, a non-profit organization focused on improving the sustainability of seafood retailers, distributors and producers. This partnership will strengthen Safeway's commitment to environmentally responsible seafood by requiring suppliers to participate in sustainability assessments and sourcing improvement plans, and will provide science-based information on sustainable seafood to Safeway and our customers.

Piloted Ocean's Promise, a portfolio of premium seafood sourced from responsible fisheries

Removed an additional three red list species from our stores, including Gulf Red Snapper, Monkfish and Grouper

Improved transparency and traceability with our suppliers
