Jobs for People with Disabilities: Nearly 10,000
Through our partnerships with organizations that create jobs for people with disabilities such as Stepping Stones, ARC and Clausen House, Safeway currently employs nearly 10,000 people with disabilities. In 2008, Safeway Chairman, President and CEO, Steve Burd received the Department of Labor’s Spirit Award for his leadership in furthering employment and workplace opportunities for people with disabilities.
Easter Seals Easter Seals
Safeway is the largest corporate fundraiser for Easter Seals and its extensive network of programs designed to help people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Over the past 22 years, Safeway has raised more than $100 million for Easter Seals programs, including vocational training, independent living, play therapy for children diagnosed with autism and early intervention therapy for children with developmental delays.
Special Olympics Special Olympics
Safeway has supported the local chapter of the Special Olympics for nearly 20 years. In 2008, the company extended its relationship with Special Olympics and its support for athletes who train and participate in the organization’s regional games.
Muscular Dystrophy Association MDA
Safeway is also one of the largest corporate sponsors of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), a national voluntary health agency dedicated to conquering more than 40 neuromuscular diseases that affect more than one million Americans. In 2008, Safeway conducted a nationwide fundraising campaign for MDA to finance medical research and programs to improve the lives of people with neuromuscular diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease. Over the years, Safeway has raised more than $32 million for MDA through customer donations at checkout and a broad range of store events, including the Aisles of Smiles program.
