Greenhouse Gas Reduction

drawing of a windmill In 2006, Safeway was the first retailer to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, making a legally binding commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 6% below our year 2000 baseline by the end of 2010. We recently completed the verification process for our 2008 emissions, and successfully reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 9%, far surpassing our legally binding agreement. Safeway remains the only retailer to have made a legally binding commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.

In 2009, we were busy on other fronts, too. We completed the construction of our first store built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standards in Santa Cruz, California, which is powered by the combined renewable energy resources of fuel cells, solar and wind. The new technology will produce clean, quiet and highly-efficient electricity.
Other 2009 highlights include:
• Completed our 18th solar project, effectively removing nearly 9.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually — the equivalent of 824 passenger vehicles

• Nominated for the coveted Zayed Future Energy Prize

Through a host of energy efficiency projects implemented across our operations, we reduced our corporate energy usage by more than 110million kWh, which is equivalent to removing the carbon emissions from 8.9 million gallons of gasoline per year.
