An ongoing priority
In 2008, Safeway donated more than $22 million to local schools through eScrip. Safeway's contributions fund a broad range of school-based programs, including art supplies, fitness activities, field trips, curriculum enhancements and other projects that may otherwise go unfunded. This program includes a $2.9 million donation through our annual 10% Back to School program, which helps schools earn money from purchases made during the back-to-school season. Customers who purchase any of the eligible products using their Safeway Club Card automatically accumulate “school dollars” for their school of choice. At the end of the program, customers receive a final donation receipt totaling their “school dollars.”

Safeway is creatively supporting arts education programs through its Lucerne® The Art of Dairy™ Art Contest. Using cow images as the focal point to promote dairy products as healthy snack alternatives for kids, Safeway, the manufacturer of Lucerne® dairy products, asks students ages 12 to 19 to submit designs based on an annual theme such as “Cows & History,” or “Taste of Moo-sic” using an outline of a cow as the canvas. After the initial submissions are judged, 30 finalists transfer their designs to life-sized fiberglass cow sculptures in the final phase of the competition. Each school receives a $250 stipend to purchase the art supplies their student finalist uses to decorate the cow sculpture. The winning student receives $20,000 for his/her school's art department, plus $5,000 each for themselves and his/her art teacher. Over four years, $200,000 has been awarded to students and their schools.
